At the beginning of 2025, Canadians will receive the Canada Carbon Rebate, an important financial support measure from the government to mitigate the impact of pollution pricing. Managed by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), this rebate will be paid out on January 15, 2025.
Eligibility for the Canada Carbon Rebate
The Canada Carbon Rebate applies to residents of participating provinces. Here are the specific requirements to be eligible:
Participating Provinces
- Riverland
- Greenfield
- Redwood
- Brighton
- Horizon
- Lakeside
- Maplewood
- Sunshine
However, residents of other provinces like British Columbia and Quebec are not eligible, as these provinces have their own carbon pricing systems.
Eligibility Requirements
- Age: You must be 19 years or older. However, exceptions are made if you are married or living with a child.
- Children: Families with children may receive additional payments. Children must be eligible for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) or GST/HST Credit.
How to Apply for the Canada Carbon Rebate
No separate application is required for most residents, but newcomers to Canada need to complete additional steps to receive the rebate:
Application Process
- File Your Taxes: Even if you have no income, you must file your annual tax return to help CRA determine your eligibility and payment amount.
- Spouses and Common-Law Partners: In the case of married or common-law partners, the payment will be issued to the person who files their tax return first.
- Newcomers to Canada: Newcomers must submit additional forms:
- For families with children: Canada Child Benefits Application (RC66 and RC66SCH).
- For individuals without children: GST/HST Credit and Canada Carbon Rebate Application (RC151).
Rural Supplement
If you live in a rural or small community, you can claim an additional 20% rural supplement by marking the designated box on page 2 of your tax return.
